The Technical Services Department works behind the scenes to provide access to materials in physical and electronic formats to the Daytona Beach and Worldwide campuses. Technical Services staff also support Scholarly Commons, our institutional repository, and serve on both library and university committees. The department is comprised of two main units: Acquisitions and Collection Services and Cataloging and Metadata. Each plays a distinct role in supporting the library's collections and access services.
Technical Services Units
Units within Technical Services perform functions related to the department's overall mission.
The Associate Director for Collection Strategy & Technical Services leads the Collection Management Team, which includes representation from all library departments and is responsible for selecting materials for the Daytona Beach and Worldwide campuses. The Acquisitions and Electronic Resources staff acquire and manage resources that support the educational and research mission of Embry‑Riddle by ordering, receiving, and processing library materials in all formats. They oversee the collections budget, negotiate license agreements with publishers and vendors, activate and maintain access to electronic resources, and troubleshoot access issues to ensure reliable and continuous availability for users across the university.
The Cataloging and Metadata staff ensure that library collections are discoverable, organized, and accurately described in the library's systems. They perform original and copy cataloging, create and enhance metadata for a wide range of physical and electronic resources, and maintain the integrity of the library’s bibliographic and holdings data. This team plays a critical role in large-scale projects such as catalog clean-up, authority control, metadata remediation, and deaccessioning. Preservation activities, including the care and repair of physical materials, are also managed within this unit to help ensure the long-term accessibility of library resources.
