Overview

Hunt Library’s Special Collections support Embry-Riddle’s mission by preserving and providing access to materials of enduring historical, cultural, and research value, with a primary emphasis on aviation and aerospace history. These collections complement the University Archives and are managed collaboratively by the library and the Archives Librarian.

Scope

Special Collections materials include rare books, manuscripts, and other unique or limited-edition items related to aviation and aerospace history. The collections also encompass materials that document significant developments in flight training, aeronautical engineering, and the global aerospace industry.

Acquisition and Donations

Acquisitions for Special Collections are primarily gift-based. The University Librarian, Senior Associate Director, and Archives Librarian evaluate potential additions for relevance, condition, provenance, and long-term research value. The library reserves the right to decline materials that fall outside the defined scope, duplicate existing holdings, or present preservation challenges.

Access and Use

Special Collections are available for use by ERAU students, faculty, and staff upon request or by appointment and to external researchers by appointment only. Materials do not circulate and are used under supervision to ensure proper handling. Reproduction requests are considered in accordance with copyright law, donor agreements, and preservation standards.

Preservation and Stewardship

The library is committed to the long-term preservation of Special Collections materials through appropriate environmental controls, handling procedures, and digital preservation practices when feasible. Conservation priorities are determined collaboratively by the University Librarian, the Archives Librarian, and the Senior Associate Director, based on material condition and research demand.
