Confidentiality Policy

Purpose

The Hunt Library's confidentiality policy is based on Florida State Law which guarantees the right to privacy of library records and ensures patrons that the library staff will not reveal patron information. In addition, the library's policy is consistent with the Code of Ethics of the American Library Association, which states, "We protect each library user's right to privacy and confidentiality with respect to information sought or received and resources consulted, borrowed, acquired or transmitted."

Policy

The privacy of all borrowers of library materials shall be respected. The Library will not reveal the names of individual borrowers nor reveal what materials are charged to any individual. The Library will not make any inquiry into the purposes for which a patron requests information or materials. Patron record information is updated and maintained solely for the use of library staff in order to keep track of library materials. (s. 257.261, F.S.)

Under no circumstances shall the staff of the library ever answer to a third party about what a patron of the library is reading or checking out from the library's collection. The Library will not yield any information about its patrons or their records to any agency of government, whether local, state or federal, without an order from a court of competent jurisdiction. The Director will answer any inquiries arising from government agencies.
